The Wind Power Plant of Gorona del Viento El Hierro, S.A. is designed to supply the island of El Hierro with electricity derived from clean and renewable sources such as water and wind. The Wind Farm has the capacity to fully satisfy the electricity demand of El Hierro. Surplus wind energy that is not consumed by the island’s population is used to pump water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir. This water is stored in the upper reservoir and used to produce electricity by means of a hydraulic jump at times when wind power is insufficient.

The upper reservoir has a capacity of 380,000 m3. This reservoir, located at an altitude of 700 m, is connected to the lower reservoir by a penstock. The lower reservoir can store 150,000 m3.

Atarfil HD geomembrane was selected for its high durability performance. In this case its UV resistance is the most critical property for both the upper and lower reservoir.
