Sealing and Closure of the Valmadrid Waste Disposal Center, Spain

Location
Madrid, Spain
Year
2015

Project Details

The Madrid Waste Disposal Center, operated from November 1987 until April 2009, serving municipal, non-hazardous industrial, and inert waste from the city and surrounding areas. Once its service life ended, it was necessary to carry out a sealing and closure project to ensure environmental safety and restore the landscape of the affected area. This type of closure guarantees long-term impermeability and environmental protection, while significantly reducing the risk of leachate generation.

The project objectives were to prevent leachate generation and guarantee the protection of both groundwater and surface water, ensure the structural stability of the waste cell, and comply with regulatory requirements for landfill sealing.

ATARFIL participated in this project through the supply of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembranes, providing a robust technical solution with high commercial value to guarantee landfill impermeabilization. The installation was done by UTE SELLADO VERTEDERO VALMADRID. The aim was to deliver a cost-efficient, durable, and quality-assured solution that strengthened the client’s confidence in ATARFIL’s reliability. This large-scale project reinforced ATARFIL’s position as a benchmark in landfill sealing solutions.

The Valmadrid project became a success story in the application of ATARFIL geomembranes, combining high technical performance with a positive environmental impact. Thanks to the robustness of the solutions and extensive experience in closure projects, ATARFIL demonstrated its ability to lead strategic projects in the waste management sector, providing added value both to the client and to the surrounding environment.

The construction system applied included:

  • Regularization layer: Compacted base with 2 m of waste and 0.2 m of cover.
  • Multilayer sealing system:
    • 0.25 m of gas-draining material.
    • Non-woven polypropylene geotextile (300 g/m²).
    • 2 mm HDPE geomembrane: smooth on platforms; textured on slopes with inclination ≥ 3H:1V, improving slope stability through textured geomembranes.
    • Drainage geocomposite for rainwater.
    • 0.50 m of cover soil for revegetation.

Additionally, complementary systems were implemented for leachate collection and transport, rainwater drainage, degassing, and revegetation, along with the replacement of electrical installations and environmental control measures.
