Vertical waterproofing barriers are used for the lateral confinement of a given volume of soil up to a given depth and provide sufficient guarantees of impermeability to prevent contamination between the confined area and the rest of the perimeter.
Vertical barriers are always a mixed element. The main containment barrier is created using geomembrane panels that are joined together using special profiles as part of conventional cut-off wall excavations filled with standard bentonite materials, bentonite–cement or bentonite–soil–cement to provide the unit with lateral stability. In addition to confinement, barriers can also be used to divert flows to prevent water filtration through slopes in an excavation and reduce potential filtration through the bottom to acceptable limits.
